The INDIAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION is the Government of India’s scientific body responsible for all activities related to the Earth Science system, such as seismology, magnetism, meteorology, geodesy, volcanology, oceanography, hydrology and tectonophysics and encourages the study and research in geophysical problems and to provide media for publication of the results.

IGU student chapter was inaugurated in our prestigious department on 8th Dec 2017. On the same day, “Electrotek & geometrics Endowment Lecture” was delivered by Prof. Mrinal K. Sen.

The aims and objectives of the union are,

·        Empower and enrich students with the necessary tools to develop and grow as professionals and leaders

·   To organize and arrange for the meetings and conferences of the Union and encourage the publication and dissemination of knowledge of geophysics and essential research in various branches of geophysics.

·   To cooperate with similar learned societies in organizing and taking part in meetings, symposia, research projects, etc. and to represent geophysics both in the national and international sphere.

·        To secure and administer funds, grants and endowments for further research in geophysics.

·        To undertake and execute all other acts which shall assist and promote the usefulness, aims and purposes of the Union.

·        Under the student chapter activity of IGU, we organise many kinds of events, lecture series, seminars etc., to convey the knowledge of the most advanced topics being studied in Geophysics.

The union offers many awards like the Hari Narain Lifetime Achievement Award, Decennial Award, Krishnan Medal, JG Negi Young Scientist Award, Anni Talwani Memorial Prize and many more to the geophysicists and geologists for their outstanding contribution to the field of Earth Science.
