MTech in Geoexploration

About

The M.Tech in Geoexploration at the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay is a two-year, full-time postgraduate program focused on the scientific and technological aspects of subsurface exploration. The program is designed to train students in understanding the physical properties of the Earth and applying geophysical and geological methods to locate and characterize natural resources and subsurface structures.

The curriculum emphasizes exploration geophysics, including seismic, gravity, magnetic, and electrical methods, along with solid grounding in applied geology, data processing, and quantitative interpretation. Rather than treating exploration as a software-driven exercise, the program stresses the underlying physics, mathematics, and Earth processes that govern geophysical signals. The second year is largely dedicated to a research dissertation, where students work on real or synthetic datasets and develop problem-solving skills relevant to both industry and academic research.

Admission for Indian nationals is highly competitive, primarily through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) performance (in relevant disciplines), followed by an in-person interviews held in select years. International applicants should directly contact the International Relations office of the institute (https://www.ir.iitb.ac.in/). Being part of IIT Bombay’s Earth Sciences department, students benefit from interdisciplinary exposure, advanced computational facilities, and a research-oriented academic environment. Graduates commonly pursue careers in mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, groundwater and engineering geophysics, geotechnical and environmental consulting, or continue into Ph.D. programs in geosciences and geophysics.
