About Us
The Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay was established as an independent department in 1982. Prior to that, it was operated as a part of the Geology Section of the Department of Civil Engineering. It successfully conducted M.Sc. program in Applied Geology since 1964 at Dept. of Civil Engineering, Subsequently, it has started M.Tech programs in Geoexploration. Later, the department introduced two more programs, the M.Sc program in Applied Geophysics in 2005 and M.Tech Petroleum Geosciences in 2007. Currently, the department boasts a strong reputation, supported by its 26 faculty members, who specialize in a diverse areas of research within a variety of fields of Geosciences, catering to the needs of academic and societal interests.
The faculty members are actively involved in both teaching and research, significantly advancing various disciplines within Geoscience. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, the faculty participate in several sponsored research projects, consulting assignments, and short-term courses through IIT Bombay's Continuing Education Programme (CEP). All core and elective courses in the programs are tailored to meet industry standards and research needs. The department's strong connections with industry and research organizations have greatly enhanced the quality of its studies and facilities. Students of the department actively pursue various student festivals, workshops and hackathons through its various national and international student chapters.

Mission
Our mission is to provide a world-class educational experience that equips students with advanced technical skills and a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s physical and chemical processes. We are dedicated to conducting high-impact research that spans the entire spectrum of the geosciences, from fundamental studies of the Earth’s crust and mantle to applied solutions in petroleum exploration, mineral harvesting, groundwater management and carbon sequestration. Through strategic collaborations with industry leaders and global academic institutions, we strive to translate laboratory discoveries into real-world applications that bolster national energy security and resource sustainability. Furthermore, the department is committed to serving society by enhancing our collective understanding of natural hazards and climate change, ensuring that our academic outputs contribute directly to the safety and prosperity of the community and the planet at large.
