We're also very athletic. Unbelievable, huh? But it's true. Read on to get an idea of just how!
Matheran Hii....finally pics are up...have a look into the photo gallery.. After whole two years, ERSA organised its first picnic cum trek on 26 September 2008 to Matheran.Hats off to our very own Kuntal Sinha our Cult secy and the other Council Members...without whose enthu..the trip would not have been possible...To add to the enthu... Prof. Hetu Sheth also accompanied us... Matheran a small hillstation in Maharashtra,is just few hours away from Mumbai.Matheran the place... complete combination of Beauty and Nature...It is the place you cannot forget.. Just a week after the tiresome Midsems...ERSA managed to organize the trip to Matheran. We took our Departmental Bus.... along with our very own Stephan Uncle.. to take us there securely. Sights, Masti, Dhoom... along with the wonderful lunch..not to forget the monkeys....In an all it was one of the most enjoyable day for our Departmental inmates.. ERSA wishes to have this type of trip every year...What say mates.... BadmintonThe relationship of the Earth Sciences department with badminton is like a nightsky with stars. Well you could just ask anyone on this previous to this year. Either by sheer coincidence or mass brainwashing, it appears that all ERSA members were obsessed with the game till the new earthlings came in. The Friday night sessions at the "baddy" court were evident enough. ERSA has its own racquets, (number) of them in excellent condition, a seemingly endless supply of shuttlecocks (shhh! The Treasurer might be listening!), and an unspoken monopoly in the court. But unfotunately this year it is not to be. The baddy court is under repair and to really tel you the truth the earthlings have lost that regular practice of meeting up at the court at the friday night and spending endless hours either playing or even for that matter gossiping. Alas! something else seems to be in store for us this year. We do not get the oppurtunity to turn up; all in one; and having those endless sessions. It seems as if it has been daylight for quite a bit of time now, with no stars on the sky. Hope that the baddy court soon comes up in working condition again and yet again we see the stars in the nightsky with the experience sharing sessions of the seniors with the juniors of the department soon after the C++ labs every weekend.
FootballIt's no wonder that football had closely rivalled badminton as the most popular sport among ERSA members. With the all infamous players like Soumik Datta, Tuhin Bhakta, Arpan Bandyopadhyay, Saji, and many others, the game had gained quite a bit of popularity among the students of the department. And soon this came up to be the favourite pastime game that the players always wanted to play with the Badminton Court under repair. And rightly so, the new council with the ERSA fund was able to come up with a few extra gears that the team badly needed. There was a good bit of enthusiasm that was shown by few budding earthlings and the already existing lot of students that was overflowing with talents.PG Sports 2007With all the preparations, and as favourites to win the PG Sports Footer this year, the team came on to the field with the minimum practice that they could manage out of the extremely bad schedule of classes this semester. The players tried to pt up a good show, and with overflowing talents, anyone in the field could say that it was destined for the earthlings to win the tournament. With 6 talented players, how can a side ever lose? Rightly so, the opponents were put on the backfoot right at the start of the game with an excellent netting of the ball by Soumik Datta, but this was not for long, soon after the half time play resumed the CSRE team found the net for two consecutive times only to dampen the spirits of the players. The team was completely demoralised so were the supporters who had come to see the Earth Scientists winning an easy game over these opponents. This was the end of PG Sports for this year on the footer ground atleast. But the team members were spirited enough to courageously accept the defeat instead of fighting over it. And the next team promised a win of the title which was won by the Mathematics Department this year, soon. PG Sports 2006Had it not been for a single goal by the HSS department striker we would have been called the champions of the game for the year 2006. But two back to back finals was enough to boost the morale of the captain of the team to put up an exhilarating show of character on the football ground. It was a delayed PG Sports tournament for us but still the crowd was overflowing with supporters outnumbering the total number of players plus the supporters of all the departments . Indeed a great atmosphere for us to win the Trophy this time over. But alas! Even this time we stood heart broken, and this time it showed on field. But we promise everyone that the next time the PG Sports comes we will be back with a bang. So we've established that it's really popular here. So popular that at the IIT-B PG Tournament in February 2005, the Earth Sciences department had the loudest and maximum number of supporters/cheerleaders/fans/Barmy Army. And they almost won the title as well, had it not been for a heart-breakingly close final that really sent a few heart-attacks around. Like all the previous years this year too on the 5 August 2006, the usual trend of organising a seniors junior match was organised yet again. and this year too like previous years the seniors won though this time it was not as easy as the previous years. The juniors put up a really tough opposition for the seniors and just when the match seemed to be going to extra time a timely netting of the ball by Arijit Ghosh. A report of the proceedings of the match is quoted below. This report is written by the referee of the match Suryyendu Choudhury and a player of the team Archisman Sen
It continues to pour down heavily at Powai and the true spirit of getting into the field in rains was once again was exhibited by the Earthlings as they played a footer match in the ground of H-1 on Satruday. All was set for the match between the new commers to the department and the pre exiting juntas. The 30 minutes match organised for the first time by ERSA in this academic year though not skinned out yet was a delight to the eyes.It was a good way out to know the enthusiasm of the freshers to the department. The seniors made it to the end with a score line of 5-4." The match started in true Earth sciences spirit 1 hours late and the lack of cheering support made its presence felt. The match was conducted by the ERSA sports secy Rajkumar and was refreed by ERSA G Secy Suryyendu. The tension was evident with threats of head butting and red cards being given out at slightest pretext. The match started in slushy grounds with the ball hardly travelling morethana few foot. The rain only added to the miseryof the players who valiently played on.With the memories of the recently concluded world cups still fresh ineveryones minds, one was surely missing the fun and goals. But with theefforts of senior players, the account opened and then the goals startedpouring in.The half time both teams were locked on 3-3.The change of ends did make a difference and the goals did not happen foralong time. Then near the end of the second half, the seniors scored andwon the closely fought match. The match ended with customary photoshoot with Abhishek Chandra trying to be the next Raghu Rai.The match also led to discovery of new talent in the department which canonly auger well for the PG tournament.. Last year, on 13 August 2005, the seniors prevailed in an exhilarating 'Seniors vs Freshers' football match against M.Sc. (I), 4-3. Another series of matches was held on 1st October 2005, in which the seniors won again, 6-3, although the freshers started well with 3 goals in the first half. Then, however, the Great Wall of Earth Sciences, the one and only Arvind S.L., came to the rescue of the seniors and led them to victory. In the second match, a combined team, comprising M.Sc. Applied Geophysics, the Research Scholars, and M. Tech. Geoexploration '04 defeated M. Sc. Applied Geology '04 1-0, with ERSA General Secretary, Ramnathan scoring the winning goal.
CricketA few days before the new earthlings had joined in the army it was quite popularly said that "If people here don't play as much cricket as they do football and badminton, it's only because, well, they play so much football and badminton!". But this was not to be in the subsequent years to come. Rightly, this was the beggining when the ERSA saw a number of overflowing talents of cricketing in the department, starting from Sunny Gavaskar to master blaster Sachin to Dhoni, and Sehwag the department had it all in them. And it came out at a time when the department was starting to lose its existence as players also; instead of just being the conquerers of the Petroleum Industry. After a disencouraging show of the cricketers on field in the PG Sports 2006, the players fought hard to give a tough fight to the opponents in for the PG Sports 2007.PG Sports 2007 The spirits of the team was low as the team came down to fight for its existence in the PG Sports as a department which was losing its charm among the field. After a good bit of practice for the past one month the team was determined to deliver and deliver with excellence. This was clearly predictable in the attitude of the players when it came for the show, some excellent batting performances by Satyaki cruised the team to a comfortable victory in the first round match, and the same continued for the 2nd round of matches too. But, unfortunately again the third round did not seem to go towards our way. With some bad decisions taken by the leg umpire, the match had almost lost all its charm and beauty, but was brought to life by two of the better batsmen in the team, Satyaki Maitra and Krishanu Bandyopadhyay, who held their nerves all through the game trying their best to keep the earthlings into the game. But, their fight only turned futile as the chemical enggineers applied some chemical ideas to rescue their team of a humilating defeat from our hands. This was the end of PG Sports 2007 for us, atleast in terms of winning team games. Many faces turned down as the close fight ended in a manner that no one had ever expected. Since time immemorial, the form of the ERSA cricket team was utterly unpredictable, with magic performances some days and ridiculously nonchalant performances on other days. This team did exceptionally well in reaching the semi-finals of the PG Tournament in February 2005, where they head-butted into ultimate champions and were made to bow out. I guess, a little more of cricket practice and a proper cricket selection team is what i feel will make us the champions in the coming years, sure the footer trophy is always for us to take. I sincerely hope that the guys that make the team next year will make a untiring effort to reach the finals and win them. We would never like to be the English of the Cricket team.
Other SportsIf you thought that the students can only play footer, cricket and badminton you are utterly mistaken. At a place like IIT, with the incredible number of sporting and extra-curricular activities and facilities provided, it's not surprising that students here kinda want to do everything! A consequence of this - no sleep. But IIT-ians tend to undergo a type of evolution involving no small amounts of coffee, wherein their bodies become accustomed to the constant state of sleep-deprivation, the side effects being slight mania and terribly corny jokes.Uh, back to the point. ERSA members also participate actively in open events like volleyball, table-tennis, carrom and swimming events at the PG Tournaments as ever before. Results were no less than disapponting, but you must be proud of something, the ever not giving up spirit of the earthlings. The extent went to such that one single player played almost all the games at the PG Sports 2007. Hats off to the guy. But a point to note that we are not much back in the game of basketball, volleyball, table-tennis, carrom. And trust me it will be very soon that you will find that the website overflows in the comments of these games being played at what IITians say "GOD" level. PG Sports 2007A devastating one in which the earthlings were practically knocked out at the first round of all, but the whole scenario seems somewhat promising. Lets all pray for the best to see the forthcoming days when we hope to see better performances of in these events also. Results - PG Sports Tournament '06 Volleyball Team: Mukund Kumar (Captain), Amardeep Kumar, Arpan Bandyopadhyay, Pravesh Kumar, Shibadatta Mahapatra, Prasunjoy Das, Aravind S.L.
Table Tennis Team: Saumya Goswami, Hydrose, Bidyut Choudhury, Aloke Saha
Trekking I'd like to think this activity is unique to ERSA amongst all the other departments at IIT-B, and I may be wrong, but with all the fieldwork that we do, trekking is sort of second nature to us. As in, we know how to walk. And we rather like to.ERSA continues to organise treks at all rainy seasons wherein the students are told of the two Golden Rules of the department(ssssshhhhhhhh, thats secret! Come up join the department and know for yourself) ERSA organised a trek in August 2004 to Naneghat as a rousing (or, dousing?) welcome to the freshers. Dousing it was. The climb was completed in good time, but torrential rains during the descent meant that the trekkers were wading, hand in hand, knee deep in water, down the "dry" stream bed that they'd climbed up. This dousing was appreciated so much that more monsoon treks were planned, but then it stopped raining, people started melting and suddenly walking didn't seem like so much fun anymore. But the beauty of Mumbai is that if it stops raining, it WILL rain again, even if a year later. Naturally, more (monsoon) treks ahead! ... contd! True to its promise, ERSA organised another trek on 20 August 2005 to Bhairavmal, just past Kasara railway station. Even more 'dousing' than last year, a good amount of time was spent under a waterfall that froze your insides almost as comprehensively as the continuous rain did that day. Far from complaining, however, everyone was just begging for more... more rain, more treks, more food, more... er.
PicnicsRemember your favourite days of primary school when you bundled out of your house at the crack of dawn, piled into your school bus accompanied by a gazillion other chattering tots, enough food to feed the army of Chile, already-weary teachers, and a few million megawatts of enthusiasm and anticipation. Yeah, them picnics! Well, the intense level of academic pressure at IIT has sort of "forced" us to resort to desperate measures, viz., rest and relaxation on beach-type-places. In 2005, ERSA folkses were carted off to Alibag, a "beach" in the outskirts of Mumbai that rivals the Sunderbans for the extensive expanses of... er... mudflats that it so aberrantly possesses. Loads of squelch to muck around in. But IIT-ians aren't a picky lot. I wonder why. The picnic was enjoyed with as much fervour as... well, as possible. Similes aren't my thing. Sea-football, muck-football, gulli cricket, gola eating, antakshari, Jeetendra and Amitabh impressions, and the likes. Clearly, not very different from school picnics. Clearly, we have not grown up. But unfortunately we are not been able to organise this picnics for the past two years as because of some problems with the dates and fixtures. The flexibility of the coursework. All this clearly goes on to show that we have become more interested in studies when it comes to the question of picnics. We do sincerely hope to organise more picnics in the days to come and do indeed hope that the students get adequete time out of their busy curriculum to come out to go for such outings.
