Laboratory Development

Developed in the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT(B) a complete user-friendly software package for geostatistical studies. The package includes :
- modules for handling exploration data and basic statistics,
- module for computation and modelling of variograms,
- module for linear estimation including ordinary kriging, simple kriging, and universal kriging,
- module for non-linear estimation including disjunctive kriging, and non-parametric methods such as indicator kriging,
- module for conditional simulation using turning bands method (now being updated to include sequential simulation),
- module for technical parametrisation of open-pits using Lerchs-Grossman algorithm.
These softwares have been used by M.Tech students for their dissertation work and have also been used for demonstration of geostatistical techniques for the M.Tech course in Mining. The programs were almost entirely written by me and were tested by various students on their data.
In 1988 the Department of Earth Sciences did not have a computer lab. The lab was developed and equipped to cater to the needs of Earth Science students. Software available includes those for Geochemical modelling, Geographic Information System, Statistics software. The Department is also networked with the Institute network. Since 1988 the Computer lab has been under my supervision and has been administered with the help of M.Tech and Ph.D students, and recently with the assistance of a Research Associate.
Currently the Fluid Inclusion Lab of the Department is being supplemented with a new Linkam Heating-Freezing stage with all accessories. Also eqiupment is being assembled for analysis of gases in fluid inclusions. This is being done with DST Project grants.
