M.Tech Petroleum GeosciencePetroleum exploration in India is undergoing a major renaissance since the implementation of the New Exploration Licensing Policy of the Government of India. The Indian and multi-national upstream oil and gas companies are making major investments in petroleum exploration and there is a growing demand of highly skilled manpower in the country. Exploration in deep water and search for alternative sources of hydrocarbon resources, including gas hydrates and coal-bed methane, are gaining ground. This is leading to new opportunities for teaching and research in petroleum geoscience. The Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay is launching a new academic programme leading to M.Tech. Petroleum Geoscience. It will start from the academic year July 2007. The proximity of the Department to major exploration companies based in Mumbai will strengthen the course and promote close interaction with upstream industry.
Major Features of the Course The course is designed with input from national and multi-national oil companies so that it is directly relevant to the needs of the industry. This will ensure that the students graduating from this course are trained to think about the most up-to-date and relevant topics in petroleum exploration. The major features of the course that will make a step-change in the quality of graduates from IIT-Bombay Petroleum Geoscience programme are:
Industry interaction
The Department is supported by major oil companies in its various teaching and research activities. It has received research funding and subsurface data by the BG Exploration and Production India Ltd., Schlumberger Oilfield Services and Reliance Industries Ltd. BG and Schlumberger have provided workstations with full use of GeoFrame software. The BG India is committed to support the new course in a major way by funding Visiting Faculty, studentships and laboratory development. It will also provide sub-surface data for project work of students. Admission
