M.Sc. (Applied Geology) Course Structure Course Details

The Masters programme involves advanced training in subjects and builds upon the foundation laid at the Bachelor’s level. The focus is on building a strong theoretical and practical framework to enable students to tackle routine work in the industry as well as to take initiative in challenging new areas. Accordingly the Masters programmeme includes fundamental courses such as Mineralogy, Thermodynamics, Palaeontology, Sedimentary Petrology, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Ore Petrology, Tectonics, Stratigraphy and Indian Geology, Crystal Optics, X-Ray Crystallography, Structural Geology, Geochemistry, Solid Earth Geophysics and Statistical Methods in Geology, as well as courses related to practical aspects such as Remote sensing, GIS and Geomorphology, Mining Geology, Engineering and Groundwater Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Geochemical and Geological prospecting, Mineral Fuel Resources, Economic Geology.

The coursework is aided by introduction to computer programmeming (FORTRAN and C) and computer applications in various fields. Some of the computer tools that the students are introduced to during the period of their coursework include – Geomedia, IDIRSI, Origin, SteroNett, AutoCAD, CorelDraw, ERDAS, Macromedia Freehand etc., apart from other software not explicitly related to the core subjects.

As a supplement to the various theoretical courses, the Department also provides the students with an opportunity to work in the field. There are two educational field programmemes in the 2nd and 4th semesters respectively, apart from the practical industry training in mining or petroleum related industries at the end of 2nd semester. The training is conducted at leading mines, such as Hindustan Zinc Limited, Hindustan Copper Limited or petroleum companies of national importance such as Reliance Industries Limited (Oil and Gas), and ONGC.

M.Sc. (Applied Geophysics) Course Structure Course Details

The Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay offers a new two year M.Sc. Programme in Applied Geophysics, for which the first batch of students will be admitted through JAM 2005. Geophysics is a branch of Earth Sciences which employs physical measurement and mathematical models to explore the earth and it’s surroundings. The Geophysics programmeme is designed to build mathematical and analytical skills, build theoretical knowledge in Geophysical fields, develop application and interpretation skills through laboratories and develop ability to carry out independent field measurements. Courses taught included those relevant to

  • Exploration for petroleum, mineral and groundwater resources
  • Solid-earth research and
  • Earthquake studies for natural hazard mitigation.

The programmeme offers an advanced and specialized training for professional work in exploration, research and education. The Department of Earth Sciences, IITB, possess excellent state-of-art Geophysical equipment along with professional software and has a strong interaction with industry. On completion of the programmeme, students can either opt for higher studies or get placed with leading industries/organizations in the petroleum, application software, mineral exploration and groundwater sectors.

M.Tech. (Geoexploration) Course Structure Course Details

The department offers two-years programmeme of M.Tech. in Geoexploration.
Admission Requirements
Candidates having 1st Class Master's degree or equivalent in Geology/ Applied Geology/ Geophysics/ Geochemistry are eligible for admission, provided they have qualified through GATE or NET. Final selection for admission will be based on GATE percentile (where applicable) and the performance at a test and/or an interview to be conducted at the Institute. Foreign nationals possessing gualifying degree from an Indian University will have to qualify through GATE for being considered for admission.

Admission is offered on the basis of an interview held usually a month before the commencement of the semester for which admission is sought.

  • Admission Requirements M.Sc./M.Tech degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry or equivalent.
  • M.Sc./M.Tech. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Marine Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences or equivalent and having Geology/ Geophysics/ Geochemistry at the B.Sc. stage as principal subjects.
