Research Areas

  • Volcanology and igneous petrology, geochemistry, geodynamics
I am interested in volcanoes and how they work, how lavas (particularly flood basalt lavas) flow and grow after eruption, and what the petrology and geochemistry of extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks tells us about magma sources, magmatic processes, and possibly large-scale geodynamics. Magma chambers are especially interesting. I am deeply interested in the substructure, or plumbing systems, of volcanoes. Much of my current work is on the geology and geochemistry of the subvolcanic intrusive systems – dykes, sills, and plutons – of the Deccan Traps. My current research interests are indicated below.

Research Interests

  • Volcanology, igneous petrology, geochemistry and geodynamics
  • Flood basalt volcanism, particularly the Deccan Traps, India
  • Subvolcanic intrusions and dyke swarms; granite plutonism
  • Rifted continental margins: Magmatism, structure and tectonics
  • Geomorphic evolution of Great Escarpments along rifted continental margins
  • The western Indian rifted margin and the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) Great Escarpment
  • The arc volcanoes of Barren Island and Narcondam, Andaman Sea
