Courses

M.Sc. (Applied Geology)

The Masters program involves advanced training in subjects and builds upon the foundation laid at the Bachelor’s level. The focus is on building a strong theoretical and practical framework to enable students to tackle routine work in the industry as well as to take initiative in challenging new areas. Accordingly the Masters programme includes fundamental courses such as Mineralogy, Thermodynamics, Palaeontology, Sedimentary Petrology, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Ore Petrology, Tectonics, Stratigraphy and Indian Geology, Crystal Optics, X-Ray Crystallography, Structural Geology, Geochemistry, Solid Earth Geophysics and Statistical Methods in Geology, as well as courses related to practical aspects such as Remote sensing, GIS and Geomorphology, Mining Geology, Engineering and Groundwater Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Geochemical and Geological prospecting, Mineral Fuel Resources, Economic Geology.

The coursework is aided by introduction to computer programming (FORTRAN and C) and computer applications in various fields. Some of the computer tools that the students are introduced to during the period of their coursework include – Geomedia, IDIRSI, Origin, SteroNett, AutoCAD, CorelDraw, ERDAS, Macromedia Freehand etc., apart from other software not explicitly related to the core subjects.

As a supplement to the various theoretical courses, the Department also provides the students with an opportunity to work in the field. There are two educational field programmes in the 2nd and 4th semesters respectively, apart from the practical industry training in mining or petroleum related industries at the end of 2nd semester. The training is conducted at leading mines, such as Hindustan Zinc Limited, Hindustan Copper Limited or petroleum companies of national importance such as Reliance Industries Limited (Oil and Gas), and ONGC.

M.Tech. (Geoexploration)

The department offers two-years programme of M.Tech. in Geoexploration.
Admission Requirements
Candidates having 1st Class Master's degree or equivalent in Geology/ Applied Geology/ Geophysics/ Geochemistry are eligible for admission, provided they have qualified through GATE or NET. Final selection for admission will be based on GATE percentile (where applicable) and the performance at a test and/or an interview to be conducted at the Institute. Foreign nationals possessing gualifying degree from an Indian University will have to qualify through GATE for being considered for admission.

Ph.D.

Admission is offered on the basis of an interview held usually a month before the commencement of the semester for which admission is sought.
